Enjoying Outdoor Living:
Big Fork Minnesota
Scenic State Park
Contributed by Morris Heilig

My favorite place is Big Fork Minnesota Scenic State Park. Big Fork is one of the most beautiful parks in the woods. It has two lakes on it. The reason we like the state park is because one lake has got all kinds of pan fish in it and we’ve been able to take our kids for the last twenty years, so they’re no longer kids. We’ve taken then up there and we’ve gone fishing. They catch Panfish, Sunfish, and Croppies. Croppies when you catch them are the biggest ones. Then you go in the other lake and you catch little Northerns. The Northerns you catch there are what we call hammer handles. In other words, they are about as long as a hammer handle. Of course what you do with them when you catch them, is you turn them back loose and hope like the dickens they will grow. Never have we caught a big enough one to keep because they have a limit. If you catch anything under twenty inches you can’t keep it. So we just throw the little ones back.

This is the place where we camp, we get a bunch of wood, and have great campfires, and we get out the s'mores. Then you sit around there with the campfire and the big tall trees you look up you see the stars as they are coming out at night. Then in bad weather, you see the rain coming down, and at times they have had a lot of rain. But it is a wonderful place for your children, and it’s a wonderful place for us because fishing is good, swimming is good, and general outdoor living is good.
