A Changing View:

The Washington Street Bridge and Weisman Art Museum

Contributed by Paul Rubin

My favorite place is the Mississippi River with a covered bridge looking out across the river to see the Weisman Art Institute. It is a beautiful building by Frank Gehry, a great sculptor and architect who likes finishing buildings in a way that they look like they are exploding. It's a really pretty building, it just makes me happy to look at it and you can see the water rushing up beneath and it's right on the university campus. It's sort of a changing view, because depending on the sun and where the sun is, the art museum looks different because the reflection off the grades is beautiful. I like being able to see the river, the bridge, the cliffs under the art museum, and then the art museum above the cliffs. It reminds me of another Bilbao--another art museum by the same sculptor and architect, which is one of my favorite places in the world, so it connects my favorite place in Minneapolis with one of my favorite places in the world.
