Memorable Candle Lighting Ceremony:

The Japanese Gardens

Contributed by Reed Turner

Probably my favorite place is the Japanese gardens at the Como Park right next to the Conservatory. Every year at the end of summer, I'm not exactly sure when, they have a candle lighting ceremony. They light a lot of candles and they send them down this waterway. And a lot of people gather. It's right when the sun goes down. It's really neat. There is kind of a mysterious eerie feeling to it and everyone's gathering there because they have heard of it but they don't really know what it is. Maybe only a handful of people actually are there because they understand the Japanese aspect to it. One year I stood next to somebody who did know, so he was explaining it to us and it was really interesting. It makes me stop thinking for a while and just enjoy the moment. It's something more peaceful then the rush of everyday life.
