Conquering Nature With Technology:

The Footbridge

contributed by Steven Ferree

My favorite place is the new, red footbridge from the east bank of the U of M to the west bank. The photo is taken from a bridge at the U of M. Bridges are a favorite place because of what they symbolize. I see bridges as a crossroads, they are in the air, they are above water and they connect two separate banks of land. When the land is wooded or populated you can get a clear view from a bridge. You can get a sense of place and direction. For good or ill, in the Cities, bridges symbolize man's conquering of nature with technology. They are the gateway to commerce that opened the west to the settlers from the east. They also span the river that carried the natural wealth south.
