Who I am…

Born: May 17, 1918
Died: December 25, 2002
Birthplace: Camden, Arkansas
Came to the Twin Cities in 1946

Kansas City, Kansas City, here I come.
There’s a lot of pretty women there and Grady’s gonna get him some.

“I wanted to ask a girl to dance, and she said ‘no’. Aw, that hurt my feelings. I looked at another one, and she said, ‘Are you just gonna look, or are you gonna dance?’ Oh, that was a lot of fun, until those girls started to say, ‘Watch out for Grady—he holds you tight.’ I was shy, see?”

My favorite place…

Favorite Place: Dancing

“That’s a nice picture. We were dancing without music—we had a little music, it would have been different. A little music—that makes you move. I was doing pretty well for a young man!

“I used to dance all the day and all the night. You go by this place and you hear some music. You say, ‘Wow, man, listen to this music!’ Somebody grabs you, and you go in.

“That’s Grady over there. Once I get started, I don’t want to stop. Oh, I could dance all night! It’s been so long since that’s been taken away from me—can’t really dance anymore.”
