Favorite places are more than simply buildings or locations; they are touchpoints, important symbols in an individual’s life which live near the center of that person’s identity. A favorite place could be something which exists in the present, or which was lost long ago. It could be primarily physical or emotional in nature.

A favorite place could be an ice-cream stand in June 1965 or Sunday dinner at Mama’s house every week or a first kiss or the perfect silence of a heavy snowstorm in winter. It could be yesterday, today, or tomorrow; it could be a place which resonates from long before we were born.

A favorite place is a picture, a story, or both. Each favorite place is unique, even if it is outwardly the same place, because no two people can possibly think about something in exactly the same way. Collecting favorite places from a widely diverse population in the Twin Cities can tell us all a lot about who we are as a community—our differences, as well as what we all have in common.
